R&D HTc Superconductors in detail

The characterisation of high Tc superconductors under magnetic field gives rise to many collaborations in particula within the ANR project "SuperSMES" and the European project "Eucard." The applications aimed at are respectively the magnetic energy storage and the fabrication of HTc dipoles for a LHC (CERN) upgrade.

Double pancake coil (2x10 turns) with a Superpower YBCO coated conductor tape 4 mm wide (SCS4050) wound on a copper mandrel (Ø 80 mm) fabricated by Julien Vialle (Institut Néel - MCBT). As a first result, we were able to inject in this coil a current up to 400 A under 18 T before the conductor breaks. This shows that the HTS conductor can sustain stresses up to 700 MPa and confirms its interest for the fabrication of HTS magnet for very high magnetic field.
