Superconducting magnet testing and HTS magnet design at CERN

The magnet test facility at CERN has two main goals :

1) qualifying magnets and other cold powering devices for use in the LHC accelerator complex

2) testing research magnets and new accelerator technology for future use.

Currently the main R&D focusses on Nb3Sn and NbTi magnet technology for the High Luminosity Upgrade and the development of a superconducting link.

In this presentation a brief overview of the test capabilities of the test stations and the developed technology will be showed.

In the second part of the presentation the design of HTS magnets will be addressed.

For the High Energy LHC HTS magnets may be needed and the HTS magnet technology needs to be developed. At the moment one of the focusses is a dipole design made with a YBCO Roebel cable.
